The Pottery Grill
Barbeque Tuscaloosa Alabama
Michael Chambliss and Tim Foster are the owners of The Pottery Grill in Cottondale, and Northport, Alabama. They, along with their
General Manager, Mark Drensky, have developed a highly successful barbeque restaurant business in West Alabama. They recently added
a third, full service restaurant to their enterprises, The Southland Restaurant in Cottondale, AL. Their story follows...
Michael and
Tim grew up together in the Coaling community and were friends all through school. After graduating high school in 1981, they both
joined the Navy. They were stationed on different ships, but at one point the ships were in the same port. It was during this time
in 1984 that the two friends began to share their dreams of opening a restaurant back in Tuscaloosa County. They decided to pursue
their dreams together.
After getting out of the Navy, Michael finished college at Appalachian State University with a BS degree in
restaurant management. Tim completed his degree in business at Troy State. After working together for a short time in North Carolina,
they decided the time was right to begin their business. They started in 1988 in Coaling, with The Coaling Crossing, a country convenience
store, where they grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches. In 1991, they purchased the Old Hamm’s Pottery After some
renovations they started selling take-out BBQ. A fire destroyed the kitchen in early 1992, so they decided to build a full service
restaurant on the same location. On September 1, 1992, The Pottery Grill opened in Cottondale. Their dreams were finally becoming
reality.
Michael and Tim realize that good things take a while and a lot of hard work. They want to do things right. For that reason,
it took them almost 17 years to open a second location. They took the basic idea they used at the Pottery Grill in Cottondale, of
providing good service to the people of the area and a product at a fair price, and duplicating it in Northport. The second location
is at 3420 Hwy 69 North in Northport.
At The Pottery Grill, the BBQ is slow cooked for up to 16 hours over a hickory fire before it
is taken off the pit and the excess fat is trimmed by hand and then chopped. All of the BBQ at The Pottery Grill is cooked the old
fashion way over a wood fire. Whether you’re hungry for some of their famous chopped pork, one of their marinated chicken breast fillets,
smoke link sausage, mouth watering ribs, or just a hot dog, you will find it all delicious. The menu also includes salads, beans,
cole slaw, fries, corn on the cob, and potato salad. All the menu items may be enjoyed in the dining room or take out. Call us in
Northport at 333-5848 or Cottondale at 554-1815 if you would like to pickup a take out order, or, talk to us about catering your next
get-together.
