The Southland Restaurant opened in July of 1947 at It’s original location in the Five Points East, Lynn Haven area, thus beginning
a tradition of service to the people of West Alabama. It began as a Drive-in Restaurant with a single counter, a few stools and a
few booths.
Much of their business was curb side service at this time. The Southland was a popular meeting place for teenagers. After
attending the drive-in movie, which was located directly across the street, it was always fun to stop and have a burger and shake,
as the highly prized 55 and 57 Chevys and Fords circled the building. It was an exciting time to grow up.
By 1964, times were changing.
The drive-ins were losing their popularity and drive-in movies closed down. It was lime for a change.
The Southland was purchased,
remodeled and enlarged by Robert and Jewell Weaver. Under their leadership, the concept was changed by the end of 1964. The Southland
was one of the largest family restaurants in the Tuscaloosa area, becoming famous for its Hamburger Steaks, Steak Sauce and Stuffed
Potatoes.
The Weavers continued the day to day operation until their retirement in 1970. At this time the operation was turned over
to their oldest daughter and her husband, Peggy and Henry Register. After three years The Southland was sold. It was operated by a
number of owners until it closed down in I975.
In September of 1989, Woody and Carolyn (youngest daughter of the Weaver’s) reopened
The Southland at its present location in Cottondale.
After a period of different management, The Southland Restaurant was purchased
by partners Tim Foster and Michael Chambliss in the summer of 2009. Tim and Michael are well known locally for their twenty years
of successful operation of The Pottery Grill Barbeque restaurants. With Mark Drensky as their General Manager, the high standards,
quality food, and customer service that people have come to expect from The Southland Restaurant continue in the rich traditions created
by its founders.
